For more than 100 years, Citizens State Bank has proudly served its customers with a comprehensive range of financial services. The bank was founded and chartered in January 1921 in Woodbine, Kansas with W. L. Johnson as president and J. A. Gillett as vice president. In 1923 the bank acquired Woodbine State Bank, originally chartered in 1897. The Johnson family maintained ownership for several decades, guiding the bank's growth and reputation for stability.
In 1975, the Johnson family sold their ownership to Kenneth E. Stout, and over his 33 years of leadership the bank experienced steady growth. In 1993, Citizens State Bank acquired The State Bank of Bremen, originally chartered in 1907. This acquisition established the bank's first branch location.
In 2008, the Moyer family purchased the bank. During the Moyer ownership, Citizens State Bank expanded by opening branches in Reading, Kansas, in 2011 and Gypsum, Kansas, in 2012.
In 2015, Citizens State Bank was acquired by the Shannon family, and under their leadership the bank has continued to grow and thrive. Expansion included opening a new branch in Council Grove, Kansas, in 2017, followed by a 2018 merger with The Roxbury Bank, originally chartered in 1908. Most recently, the bank marked another milestone with the opening of its Louisburg, Kansas branch in 2023.
